You can see how your state ranks in the utilization and cost of community college with a new report from the Rockefeller Institute of Government at the State University of New York.
According to the report:
States with strong community college systems offer a cost-effective way to help more of their students eventually earn four-year degrees; will enable more of their citizens to way to help more of their citizens eventually earn four-year degrees; will enable more of their citizens to move up from low-wage jobs and find high-skill, well-paid careers; will bolster economic development by meeting employer needs for qualified workers; and will help high school graduates with weak skills catch up.
The report measures such variables as:
- Share of all higher education enrollments in the state;
- Share of a state’s total population 18 and over enrolled full or part-time in community college;
- Share of a state’s total population 18 and over represented by full-time equivalent registration in community colleges;
- Five-year growth rate in community colleges; and
- Comparison of community college enrollment growth compared to public four-year colleges and universities.
