Chris Gibbons in Littleton, CO passes along this note from the SBA:
Subject: High-Impact Firms: Gazelles Revisited
Analyzing the 1994 to 2006 period, High-Impact Firms: Gazelles Revisited finds that high-impact firms are relatively old, rare and contribute to the majority of overall economic growth. On average, they are 25 years old, they represent between 2 and 3 percent of all firms, and they account for almost all of the private sector employment and revenue growth in the economy. The report revisits and expands upon some of small business research pioneer David Birch's conclusions on rapidly growing firms (so-called gazelles),pointing out that high-impact firms had no clear signals with regard to their future status as high-impact firms in the years preceding their high growth. The number and share of high-impact firms for cities and counties are also displayed.
